Do I Need An Aircon Service?

Air conditioning units are a vital part of many homes and commercial premises. They provide cooling for comfort in the hot months of spring, summer and autumn. However, as they are prone to wear and tear, they require regular maintenance in order to continue to perform effectively. It is estimated that a good quality home AC service should be carried out twice per year, while larger units should be serviced four times annually.

The best way to ensure your air conditioning unit continues to operate at peak efficiency is through planned preventative maintenance (PPM). PPM includes tests, checks and calibration of equipment to verify efficient operation. It also allows for the detection of faults and repairs.

Faults can occur through normal operation of the system or through the effects of age, environmental factors and poor maintenance. They may appear as a fault code on the unit’s display or they may be evident by excessive noise, a loss of power to the fan or a reduction in cooling. PPM helps to mitigate these faults, ensuring your air conditioning system will function as efficiently as possible throughout the season.

PPM can be conducted by a qualified air conditioning technician. They will test the systems components, including fuses and electrical connections. They will examine the evaporator and condenser coils for debris build up, clean them and check for any leaks. They will also check the refrigerant level and perform a trail run to assess coolant flow and performance. Additionally, they will inspect and replace filters and hoses to reduce the risk of dirt entering the system and reduce energy consumption.

Do I need to get my air con serviced?

Whether your home or workplace air conditioning needs to be serviced is down to the size of your household and the cooling requirement. A bigger family or a high demand for cooling will increase the need for a regular aircon service. It is recommended that you have your air con serviced in the early spring to ensure it will be ready for the hotter months of summer.

If you haven’t had your car’s air con recharged since it was new, you are probably overdue for a service. However, it’s important to remember that services are about spotting problems, not fixing them. For example, if your car’s air con isn’t working properly, it could be a sign that the wrong air con gas has been used when the system was recharged – and this can cause damage.

It is crucial that your service engineer has the correct qualifications for servicing refrigeration, air conditioning and heat pump equipment containing F-Gases. Natural persons need to obtain training through QQI to meet this requirement and it is also mandatory that companies that work with such equipment have their engineers registered for PPM. This is to ensure that only trained and qualified engineers are allowed to carry out work on these sensitive appliances.
