When it comes to HVAC systems, split system units are the most common type found in homes and businesses. They consist of an outdoor cabinet containing the compressor, condenser coil and fan, and an indoor enclosure housing an evaporator coil and fan.

The two parts of the AC unit are linked together using a system of copper refrigerant lines that run back and forth between them. The evaporator coil removes heat from the air, and the compressor pushes this heat out into the outdoors through a series of fans. The cooled air is then blown through the house’s ductwork to provide comfortable and even temperatures in every room of the building.

Another variation on the split system is the packaged air conditioner, which combines all of the HVAC components into one unit. While less common than split systems, it’s a good choice for some applications.

There are also a few different types of split air conditioners that use other types of heating. These include gas split system ACs, which combine a gas furnace with the indoor air handlers to offer efficient and even temperature control throughout the home. In addition, there are heat pump and electric split system ACs that use an outdoor unit to pull heat from the ground or air and then transfer it indoors.

Another option is the ductless mini-split, which eliminates the need for a complex system of ductwork by using small wall-mounted indoor air handlers to cool individual rooms. These are popular with home and business owners who want the flexibility of zoned climate control.
